What are the Elements of Art?
Line is path of a point moving through space.
Shape / Form is spatial form and is usually perceived as two-dimensional. Form has depth, length, and width and resides in space. It is perceived as three-dimensional.
Colors all come from the three primaries and black and white. They have three properties – hue, value, and intensity.
Value refers to relative lightness and darkness and is perceived in terms of varying levels of contrast.
Texture refers to the tactile qualities of a surface (actual) or to the visual representation of such surface qualities (implied).
Space / Perspective- Space refers to the area in which art is organized. Perspective is representing a volume of space or a 3-dimensional object on a flat surface.

Activities
- Students: Choose a element of art and create a word chain by using synonyms to create an interesting list of words associated with one element. See which words you feel make the most sense in relation to the element of art and which relate to another meaning.
- Students: Choose an an art movement and create a word graphic with wordle!
- Drawing and Writing: Sketchnoting The Graphic Recorder is a great site to learn more about "Sketch-Notes" a way of visual note taking and jotting things down by combining text and drawings.

1. Elements of Art Vocabulary Illustration Activity
Students will use a computer art program such as KidPix, or web tools such as Psykopaint, ArtPad, or MugTug to illustrate an Element of Art.
Example vocabulary Term: "Texture"
In this example, I used the online application Psykopaint to illustrate the art element "texture." I chose a picture that showed texture and a brush called "Renoir" that created textured strokes in the style of the famous artist Renoir.

2. Elements of Art Vocabulary Analogy Activity
We will use a range of technologies to convey and remember the Elements of Art. Students will access the Element Acronym Word document and complete it using their own words for each of the Elements of Art. Students will create a presentation displaying an example of each of the seven elements of art using Screencast.com, Voicethread.com, or Microsoft PowerPoint. |
